“The last 102 years of Montague’s long history have been a part of our family, encompassing three generations,” said Thomas Whalen. “We could not have achieved this exceptional outcome – both in terms of value and partnership - without the help of CMG. They helped us every step of the way and delivered well beyond our expectations.”

Business Description

For over 150 years, The Montague Company, headquartered in Hayward, California, has provided the highest quality American made commercial cooking equipment suited for the most demanding environments. As a family owned and operated business with over 150 years of specialized manufacturing experience, the Company uses its expertise to manufacture heavy and medium duty ranges, counter equipment, fryers, broilers, gourmet pizza ovens and custom island suites for its institutional foodservice and restaurant clients across the globe.

Background

Since 1996, Thomas Whalen has worked to build upon his father and grandfather’s legacy as President and CEO of the Company. For 20+ years he transformed and grew the Company into what it is today. Reaching an inflection point in his life and coming to the realization that under different ownership Montague could continue to prosper and increase in size, he sought to divest the Company and enlisted the expertise of CMG.

Solution

Carter Morse & Goodrich was engaged to assist Montague in preparing, planning, and executing a successful outcome and transaction. CMG was tasked with finding the right partner to continue on the 150+ year legacy of Montague while ensuring that many of the values so important to Montague and its people remained in place for the family-held organization. After embarking on a sell-side process, The Ali Group was eventually selected to continue The Montague Company’s legacy. “The last 102 years of Montague’s long history have been a part of my family, encompassing three generations,” said Thomas Whalen. “We are thrilled that the Ali Group will carry on our strong family values and traditions with integrity, and I am confident the Montague legacy will continue as the premier cooking and refrigeration equipment company, with its commitment to consistently develop, produce, and market the finest quality commercial cooking and refrigeration equipment available in the industry under Ali’s stewardship.”
