The second-largest US spirits maker by volume, Sazerac Company, has acquired a significant strategic stake in John Distilleries (JDL), India’s fifth-largest liquor company and owner of Paul John Single Malt. This marks a rare M&A deal — the only transaction other than Diageo’s takeover of United Spirits in over a decade — in the heavily regulated and consolidated domestic liquor industry.
